In-class read: “Every Week is Banned Books Week for Chicanos.”
What are some topics from the Cesar Chavez discussion that apply to the issue discussed in this essay?
Here is one example. A student asked Dr. Orosco how come he was not taught more about Cesar Chavez in high school or middle school. The lecture and the essay both form part of the reason and part of the response.

Texas-sized Counter Culture.

It is a shame to watch the Children of the Hipppies become the Nixon their parents and grandparents defied.
On the other hand, Texas is poised to go one of two ways. TX can become the America Nixon wanted. Or Texas can become the Counter Culture that MLK, Cesar Chavez, and Dolores Huerta Dreamed of.
America, get ready for a Texas-sized Counter Culture.
Of course, we have to keep out-thinking the oppressors, which isn't too hard to do.
However, the bad guys have the benefit of time, energy, and money to study our tactics, and to pay people to respond.
Our gente in Arizona are strong, smart, and they inspire us.
It is plain to see the tactics that the far right employed in Arizona are now being thrown at Texas.
However, we have several advantages.
First, we have the wisdom and strength from our familia in Arizona. They have seen all of this oppression and have defied it.
Republicans are now trying to create the Texas version of Jan Brewer.
But they have hit a wall.
Perry did combine a Joe Arpio move with a Jan Brewer move by sending the National Guard to the Border. But, Jan Brewer was never indicted, as Perry was over the weekend.
Everything changes in a Texas minute.
The Protesters Handbook is the play book that will keep us thrilling the American Imagination and fighting for Freedom of Speech and Intellectual Freedom-and winning.
So sit back as the Kock Brother dump millions into Texas. It is wonderful for them to find out there are still somethings they can't buy. It is even better for them to learn that Only Art Can Save us.
So stay tuned for the next installment of the Chicano Literary Renaissance in all its splendor.
